CoinKrewe Shipping Insurance: Currency Coverage Options
Prepared 10/23/26. Research only: nothing was enrolled, changed, or sent.
The problem in one paragraph
High value CK boxes go out on Pirate Ship UPS labels with declared value. UPS and FedEx do not cover money, and Pirate Ship's InsureShield policy also excludes "cash; currency; money" outright. So the extra coverage we buy on currency boxes would not pay a claim. Separately, every TikTok package gets a TikTok label (to release the payout) that rides on an envelope with a note, while the goods travel in a consolidated Pirate Ship box. That means no TikTok coverage program protects the box that actually carries the notes today, because TikTok only covers the package on its own label.
Our numbers (from CK exports, 7/23 to 10/12)
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Pirate Ship labels | 282 purchased (181 UPS, 101 USPS) in about 272 shipments, ~102 shipments/mo |
| Pirate Ship spend | $12,355 total; UPS $9,499 (median $45/label), USPS $2,856 (median $13) |
| UPS spend per month | ~$3,500 (postage plus declared value we can't collect on) |
| Estimated value shipped in Pirate boxes | ~$420K/mo; median box ~$2,600; 62 boxes over $5K, 9 over $15K, 2 over $25K, none over $50K |
| All CK TikTok packages over $100 (last 90 days) | 1,112/mo holding 89% of sales value (~$626K/mo) |
Box values are estimated by matching the biggest buyer-weeks of TikTok orders to the Pirate shipment count (Pirate exports have no order link). Treat them as the right order of magnitude, not exact.
Option 1: Inside TikTok
A. TikTok Shipping Protection Program (upgraded TikTok Shipping). 1% of package value, only on packages over $100, pays what the buyer paid up to $15,000. Loss claims are automatic; not received/damage claims within 60 days. The public page lists no product exclusions and names no underwriter. - Blocker 1, our workflow: it covers only the package shipped on the TikTok label. To use it, the goods must physically ship on TikTok labels, one TikTok package per label, instead of consolidated weekly Pirate boxes. - Blocker 2, unconfirmed currency coverage: Seller University separately lists "bills, notes, currency, money" as uninsurable, and Seel's general terms (Seel runs TikTok's Seller Shipping Protection) exclude "cash," "negotiable papers," and "precious metals." Whether any of that applies to the upgraded program is not public. - Blocker 3, carrier control: TikTok assigns the carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEx, SpeedX). No Registered Mail or Priority option. Signature ($4.15) is only on FedEx Ground/Home and USPS Ground Advantage. - Cost if it worked: ~$4,200/mo at 1% of what we now ship in Pirate boxes; ~$6,300/mo if applied to every TikTok package over $100. Boxes over $15K (about 3/mo) would be underinsured.
B. Legacy TikTok Shipping + U-PIC. U-PIC's TikTok terms are the only TikTok-linked wording that helps us: currency is excluded only when "valued at its face value (Collectible coins/bills are not excluded)." But it is legacy-only (our shop is on upgraded shipping), $200 free, max $5,000 extra per label bought at label time. Too low a cap for ~60 boxes/mo.
C. Seller Shipping Protection (Seel/Route, 1.2%, own carrier via 3PL). Seel's general exclusions ("cash," "negotiable papers," "precious metals") make this the weakest TikTok fit for currency and bullion.
TikTok verdict: nothing in TikTok today gives written, reliable coverage for consolidated currency boxes. Option A is worth one written question to TikTok (drafts in the companion file), but it would also force us to stop consolidating.
Option 2: Outside TikTok
| Option | Paper currency | Coins | Bullion | Carrier | Cost | Max per box | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Registered Mail | Yes, full value (DMM 609 4.1(14) carves Registered out of the $15 currency cap) | Yes, fair market value | Yes | USPS retail counter only, no Pirate Ship, paper/cloth tape, no padded/Tyvek mailers | Fee $25.00 (to $500) up to $40.50 (to $5K), +$3.10 per $1K above; ~$4,000/mo fees for our mix, plus postage | $50,000 | High (USPS rules) |
| USPS Priority / Express + USPS insurance | No, $15 max | Coins at market value (Priority) | No | Any | Small | $5,000 | High |
| Pirate Ship InsureShield (today) | No | Only coins with no currency value | No | UPS/USPS | What we pay now | $10K UPS | High |
| U-PIC direct (shipper policy) | Likely yes for collectible notes ("Collectible coins/bills are not excluded"), must confirm on our own policy | Yes (collectible) | Bars/ingots no | Works with major carriers, could keep Pirate Ship labels without its insurance | Quote (not public); per shipment or monthly | Quote | Medium |
| Collectibles Insurance Services (CIS) dealer policy | Probably (markets "Coin & Currency," covers paper), confirm | Yes | Yes, but "Gold" on a non-qualify list, confirm | Mailing sublimits: Registered/Express $25,000; Signature/Insured $2,000; no signature $400 | Annual premium (quote) | $25K by Registered/Express | Medium |
| Cabrella | Not stated (markets numismatics, bullion, cash in transit) | Yes | Yes | Reportedly USPS Priority/Express OK | Quote | ~$150K (secondary source) | Low-medium |
| Parcel Pro (UPS Capital) | Unclear, needs written approval | Not named | Yes | UPS/FedEx | Quote | $150K+ | Medium-low |
| Shipsurance, eBay ShipCover, XCover | No / no / unclear | High (excluded) |
What the trade does: dealers and graders favor USPS Registered for notes; bullion dealers use private policies (Parcel Pro, Cabrella) on UPS/FedEx. Whatnot uses XCover at 1% up to $10K.
Recommendation
- Stop paying for coverage that cannot pay. For currency boxes, Pirate Ship/UPS declared value is near-pure waste. Don't drop it until step 2 is in place, though, so we are never fully bare.
- Get two quotes this week, in parallel:
- U-PIC direct shipper policy, the best fit for keeping the current workflow (Pirate Ship labels, weekly consolidation, UPS speed). The deciding question: will they confirm in writing that graded and raw collectible notes are covered at sale value on UPS?
- CIS dealer policy, the best long-term fit. It also covers inventory at the office and at shows (Chaos 11/14-15), coins and bullion. Its $25K mailing limit means using USPS Registered or Express for big boxes.
- Bridge until a policy is bound: ship boxes over ~$2,500 (roughly 142 of 272 in the period, ~53/mo) by USPS Registered Mail at the counter. That is the only option with written currency coverage today. Expect ~$2,500/mo in Registered fees for those boxes plus slower delivery (often 7-14 days). Boxes under $2,500 stay as they are while we wait on quotes.
- Send the TikTok questions anyway. If TikTok confirms in writing that the upgraded Shipping Protection Program pays on graded collectible notes, it becomes the simplest answer for single-order buyers (1%, automatic loss claims), but only if those orders ship on the TikTok label itself.
Likely monthly cost comparison (estimates)
| Setup | Est. monthly cost | Pays a currency claim? |
|---|---|---|
| Today: Pirate UPS + declared value | ~$3,500 | No |
| All boxes USPS Registered | ~$4,000 fees + ~$1,000 postage | Yes, up to $50K |
| U-PIC direct on UPS | Quote + UPS postage without declared value (lower than today; exact split unknown) | Likely, confirm |
| CIS annual policy + Registered/Express for big boxes | Premium (quote) + postage | Probably, confirm |
| TikTok Shipping Protection | ~$4,200 to $6,300 | Unknown; needs no-consolidation workflow |
Compliance flags found during research (not insurance, but they matter for claims)
- TikTok's Prohibited Products Policy (updated 10/22/26) lists "gold certificates or silver certificates" under prohibited currency, with no collectible exemption stated.
- Collectibles Requirements prohibit "Coins and money that are ungraded and circulating"; raw modern star/fancy-serial FRNs could fall under that.
- Coins and currency are an invite-only category; confirm CK is approved.
- Our export categorizes ~5,850 of the last 90 days' packages as "Ungraded non-circulating US Coins," even though most product is currency. Miscategorized listings can complicate claims and policy reviews.
- Every insurer (U-PIC, Shipsurance) denies claims when the outside of the package "describes" or "alludes to" contents. Keep labels and return addresses plain (no "Coin," "Currency," "Krewe" on the outside if avoidable).
Must be confirmed in writing before relying on anything
- TikTok: does the upgraded Shipping Protection Program cover graded and raw collectible notes, coins, bullion; who underwrites; how value is proven.
- U-PIC: collectible bills covered at sale value on our direct policy, on UPS, from PA, with Pirate Ship labels; rate and per-box max.
- CIS: paper money explicitly covered, gold conflict, current mailing sublimits, premium.
- Whether USPS treats collectible notes above face value as currency ($15) for non-Registered services. Registered avoids the question.
